Another dimension of collective performance and
resilience that the workplace must encourage:
a culture of caring and consideration. ‘The day
soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day
you have stopped leading them’, Colin Powell once
astutely observed. And when times are dif ficult,
riddled with disruptions, these problems are legions.
Management of ficers’ capacity to take care of
their troops becomes a crucial part of the equation
for keeping collaborators engaged in the years to
come. Workplaces will have to strike that subtle
balance between openness for opportunities to ‘feel
the pulse’, to pay attention to others, and intimacy so
people can feel taken care of in their own cocoons.
The interior design must promote and deliver this
culture of consideration.
