Monolithes by Valentine Thamin
Valentine Thamin’s Monolithes collection, published by Cider, is a contemporary tribute to the Breton dolmens, those spiritual monuments of prehistory. Inspired by the architecture and millennia-old engravings of the Cairn de Gavrinis, this series of tables captures the raw, mysterious beauty of man-made stones.
.
Monolithes is a set of tables resting on ovoid legs, each with a unique finish: a central leg evoking burnt wood, another in gold, and a third in bluish black. These irregularly shaped legs appear polished by time and support a Valchromat top, available in light grey or black. This material, a solution-dyed medium, has a texture reminiscent of stone, with a surface and edges that are delicately polished and irregular, offering a softness to the touch.
.
The top is adorned with sinuous engravings depicting the sea currents of Brittany’s shores, adding a poetic dimension to the apparent solidity. Rectangular, square, oval or round, each table in the Monolithes collection is equally at home as a meeting table, dining room table or executive desk.

Monolithes : Ancient history meets modern design
.
On the island of Gavrinis, in the Gulf of Morbihan, a large cairn of engraved dolmens conceals mysterious drawings that seem to represent the spirals of ocean currents on the surface of the water. Considered the Sistine Chapel of the Neolithic, the Gavrinis Cairn bears witness to man-made signs dating back to 4000 BC, long before Egyptian hieroglyphics.
.
Brittany is famous for its menhirs and dolmens, veritable spiritual monuments of prehistoric times, made of granite blocks weighing several tons. Their construction remains shrouded in mystery. Through its architecture and engravings, the Monolithes series pays tribute to these essential constructions. In Breton, dolmen means “stone table”, a description that finds a new interpretation in this elegant, contemporary collection.
